Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club Pembrokeshire Half Marathon & 10k Dale - Sunday 12th September 2004 |
|
It is several years since Pembrokeshire Tri Club ran an event open to non-members, and the planning of the Pembrokeshire Half Marathon and 10K races proved a pretty sharp learning curve for those at the heart of the organising. The fact that things ran so smoothly, with the event being widely regarded as a great success, is a considerable reflection on the hard work and efforts of many people too numerous to mention, and we are extremely grateful for all those who gave up their time to help out both on the day and in the lead up. Particular mention must go however, to Dave Howells and Julia Hill, without whom the event would never have happened. There were a few problems but nothing I trust that spoiled anyone's day and hopefully the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all (apart from the torrential shower just before the start of the 1/2 marathon, which there again served to build character). We will be looking at what went well and what could have been improved, with the hope of putting on an annual event for the future that is better again. If you have any constructive comments we would like to hear them, good or bad, and would be grateful if you could e-mail them to us at pembstri@sporty.co.uk for the attention of Dave Howells. In all 200 people entered the two runs, 126 in the 1/2 marathon and 74 in the 10K, although not everyone who entered were able to compete or finish so we actually had 103 finishers in the 1/2 marathon and 61 in the 10K. Thus this was one of the biggest events in the running calendar for this part of the world and I was especially impressed that given the number of club members involved in marshaling, organising, manning water stations and generally running around like mad things, we still managed to have 18 members complete one of the two runs. A superb effort! It was also very pleasing to see the good support from the other running clubs in the region and also from the large number of runners unattached to any particular club. I don't yet know how much was raised but it will hopefully be a significant contribution to the Bucketful of Hope Appeal, launched by Adam and continued with great enthusiasm by his parents. Details will hopefully follow on this page in the next few days as will a range of photos of the event. In respect of the results, Andrew Abbott (Sarn Helen) pipped Clive Thomas (TROTS) to the line by 4 seconds in the men's half marathon race, with Caroline John of VWA Harriers taking a good win in the ladies race by nearly 3 minutes. In the 10K race, there were clear winners in both the men's and women's categories, with Roger Coombs (TROTS) and Sian Williams (Pembs Tri) coming in several minutes ahead of their nearest rivals. Times in both races were good given the strong blustery conditions. To see the full set of results, log on to Rowland & Pat's CSA website, with the results for the club members being listed below.
