Llanelli Half Marathon - 2 March 2008

Llanelli is one of my favourite places. I stated work there 33 years ago when it was a grimy, slightly run down industrial town, but I loved it, the people were fantastically friendly, and the rugby team was awesome, as was the beer (Felinfoel Double Dragon). Now most of the industry has gone, and the dereliction along the sea front has all but disappeared, replaced by a superb coastal amenity area.

It was to here, then, that five of the tri club’s most notorious hypochondriacs travelled on Sunday the 2nd March. A casual eavesdropper in the car would have concluded that this was a trip to Lourdes rather than five relatively fit and active people about to undertake a sporting adventure of their own free will. I won’t trouble you with the specifics, but the Casualty scriptwriters would have been beside themselves. Runners, you will understand, like to get their excuses in first.

The course was mainly on the millennium coastal path, and was quite flat, car free, and very scenic. The organisers did an absolutely first rate job, and my only gripe is that I got my shiny new running daps a bit muddy going to get my Tee shirt. I only hope that some of the organisers of the Cardiff Half Marathon were present to see how it should be done.

It was fabulous race. Surprisingly, we all survived and had a good time. We also achieved some good times, particularly Brian who reduced his pb by a large margin and is now on a mission to teach Texans how to say LLaneLLi. We are all, of course, now suffering horribly and will bore you with the sordid details at the next run training session, if indeed any of us can make it.
