Llanelli 10k, 19 June 2011

Report by Val Brown

Being unable to join fellow club members on the Ireland trip, I thought I would give this race a go for the first time in yonks. I thought it might be useful to do a 10k as a training run.

I was pursuaded to run as part of a corporate team through work, Rhedwyr Sir Gar - a particularly good bargain since we got a discounted entry fee of £11, and a race vest with our names on the back.

I was joined by Richard (whose entry I did on his behalf without much prior consultation), Kirsty (running for TROTS) and Clair from the Club.

Weather looked perfect - with relatively little wind for Llanelli waterfront, sunshine and about 15 degrees. With a field of around 600 runners - it actually took the best part of 1k to settle into position. The race runs along similar lines to the half marathon for anyone who's done that - out towards Burry Port, back towards North Dock and finishing at the same place we started from. This means that you get a reasonable idea of position on the double backs.

My target was around 50mins - around 2.5 minutes faster than the 10k time trial a few weeks ago. I was pretty much spot on until 8k, and had a kilometer or 2 off pace but managed to pick up the last one to finish in just over target.

Kisty and Clair had good races, scooping prizes for 1st and 3rd F35s.

My only claim to fame was our corporate team won a trophy for our efforts - although I am not sure where it is going to be displayed...................?

The race is very well organised, and certainly a good one to get you to think about pace. Certainly useful at this stage in the race calendar.
