Llanelli Half Marathon

11th March 2007

Report by Val Brown

We had entered this race a few weeks ago as a final training race before the long awaited Prague Half Marathon at the end of the month.

The weather forecast had not been brilliant, and given that the Millennium Coastal path can be very exposed, it looked like this could have been quite tough. As it turned out, however, conditions were pretty good with light cloud but a bit of a brisk headwind between 7 and 10 miles.

The race itself is centred around Festival Fields in Llanelli with a loop out towards Bury Port, then back through North Dock and beyond through the dunes for what seemed to go on forever, before turning around to come back after about 10 miles. The course itself is more or less flat, and without too strong a wind would be ideal for a PB.

Four club members took part this year, with Adrian Howard performing well coming in a comfortable 1.29.08. Richard kept me company to make sure I didn’t set off too fast, and we finished in 1.47.30. Julia, who was a half marathon first timer took the race very sensibly and set off at a comfortable pace and was able to pick it up by the end – she finished well within what she is probably capable of in a time of 1.48.46 – no doubt she will exceed this considerably in Prague.

At the end we were treated to a free meal – the choices were hot dogs or the veggie option was chips! Needless to say – Richard had double helpings and ate mine too!

All in all, a very enjoyable race – one I would do again.
