Llanelli Duathlon
1st April 2007
Report by Alex Ilyat
The conditions this year were fairly similar to last year, however it was still dark when we left Haverfordwest – 6am. Only 61 other people fancied the new 8am start this year and only 5 of those were from our club, Darren, Lee, Patrick, Mark and me. At 6.30am I realised that I had forgotten my bike helmet; too late to turn back now, luckily Ian was just waking up and was happy to drive like a demon to bring it down to Llanelli.
I wasn’t the only one having kit issues, Darren’s bike had lost the arm rest pad on the way down so we bandaged it up with a few dressings from the back of the van. It looked a bit like dog with a sore ear - apparently very comfortable though.
The 5k run was a 2-lap circuit along the millennium path, so fairly flat and fast. It is a great course for spectators as there is always someone whizzing past. Patrick and Lee had a flying start with Patrick finishing the first run in third place. The bike was a 2-lap course of 27k (changed due to road works at the last minute). Patrick was lightning fast coming in first place– must be the shiny new kit. Apart from a couple of inclines with a head wind, the course was slightly undulating. Unfortunately Mark retired after the bike.
The last 5k was as hard as ever but with the two laps we could cheer each other to the finish and finally collapse. Patrick fought hard in the second run and did incredibly well to finish 3rd.
